Phlebotomy means collecting blood for the purpose of transfusion and other medical tests. They have the responsibility for,

  • Convincing and guiding the patients about collecting blood samples or transfusion process.
  • Identify patients name and labeling it properly, helping patients after blood transfusion, if they have any side effects.
  • Follow medical instructions perfectly
  • Equipment sterilization and disposing them safely.

Phlebotomist also has various tasks to perform. They do blood and urine tests, apart from collecting these. They should also know how to deal with hematomas and nerve damage. They take necessary steps to avoid contamination of samples to ensure accuracy of result.

Phlebotomists Training

In phlebotomy certification training you gets trained for, taking care of your patient under various scenarios, precautions to be taken in different situations, like lab, hospital and blood banks. Usually, the training period for phlebotomist is within four to six months depending upon your school.

This training is a good base to start with if you are interested in medical laboratory career or want to become a specialized medical technician or a Registered Nurse.

Opportunities Available For Phlebotomists

Though, as a phlebotomist, you may have limited opportunities when you enter in the field. With more experience you get more opportunities. Like in other career field, the more experience and education you have, more is the scope for career opportunities. Some of the positions you can choose to advance are phlebotomist specialist, donor specialist. Just update your knowledge on the related field of your interest.
